The Poor State of Schools in My Area (Must Read)
Poor State Of Schools in my Area: I was raise in the central part of Nigeria which has a large population of people living there. The area accommodates over one million people from different parts of the country. The same way there are schools ranging from day care centres, primary schools, secondary schools to make handful of Tertiary institutions.
Amongst all these schools are the government owned schools popularly referred to as “government schools or public schools”. This is so because of the condition of the structures of such schools, like the large number of students in the school, the unwholesome nature of the entire vicinity as well as the laissez-faire attitude of most students in the area.
Among these public schools are: Craig Baptist High School, Grammar School, Community Grammar School, Clegg Girl’s High School, New Era Girls, Stadium High School, Gbaja Boys High School, Government College and host of others.
Some of the problems faced by these schools include, absence of functional libraries, poor state of laboratories , insufficient number of subject teachers, open roof classrooms, thereby causing leakages; dilapidated fence and gates, absence of play ground, poor toilet condition, lack of pipe-borne water for students, insufficient food centres , broken chairs and tables, poor conditions of classrooms, badly fenced premises, non-provision of school buses by government and so on.

Firstly, most school in my area have no libraries and due to this, students go to municipal areas to study in the public libraries . This on its own, is a major fault that demands urgent action by the government if the saying that “the Youths are the leaders of tomorrow” is something to hold on to.
Secondly, the poor state of laboratories in most government schools has become an eyesore .Though those laboratories exist they are nothing but empty structures with no laboratories equipment in them. For science students, most of the chemical equipment for experiments are broken while some have worn out. Even the laboratories lack most modern storage devices, computers, good fans or air conditioners , spacious environment, cupboard, First Aid equipment and other things necessary for science students to use for practical classes.
Also, most of these schools in my area lack enough number of subject teachers to teach them. For this purpose, one teacher teaches about their to three subjects ,and we all know, Jack of all trades will end up being master in none.
Furthermore, some schools in my area can hardly survive hot sunny weather or rainy season due to open roof classrooms and half fenced buildings. Students even prefer to stay at home during rainy season because there’s no need of staying in classroom that is not better than staying outside the rain.
Due to the bad fence and gates in these schools, students who come late jump over fence and bypass the gate to escape punishment which is part of learning process for them. What this causes is neglect of teachers, rudeness, waywardness ,stubbornness and in severe cases, some boys may end up beating the gatekeeper of he chases after them.
Playing and exercising is another way of making the child to learn, and the facility is highly absent in some schools in my area. Even field for football and sporting activities are not taking into consideration in the designing of the school buildings. Tat the end of the six years it is assumed that the child that passed through this kind of learning environment has incomplete learning procedures as the school has not passed through that child.
One of the most essential need of man is Water and a condusive place to pass out faeces. When these two facilities are not there then the environment non-habitable for any one. Even food canteens/centres are t9 be provided by the government whenever a school is to be built, since students can not leave their school to go back home to eat during break periods.
Another most annoying is for the teacher to come in to teach and find out that large number of students are either standing or petching on themselves due to broken chairs and tables or shortage of supply furniture to some schools .
A standard classroom is one with good roofing, good chairs and tables, clean water, electricity ,chilled environment, computers, well ventilated environment as well as peaceful atmosphere to make school environment home away from home.
Finally, it is the duty of the government to provide for students school buses farmland for agricultural science and other things. Since some schools are far from the homes of these students, thereby making them trek long distances to school, it will be advisable for the government to provide, at least two school buses to both junior schools and senior schools .
However, everything that has a beginning must have an end and every problem in this life has solutions to it. Government must ensure that there is a good and condusive enviroment to make government schools more attractive than privately owned schools. There is also a need for the provision of good roads leading to the schools, more well-structured schools like Queen’s and King’s Colleges, pipe-borne water, food canteens /centres, laboratories ,libraries, good roofs, well equipped classrooms, spacious environment to serve as play ground as well as sporting centres for students. When all the above mentioned amenities are put to place, schools in my area will become more attractive to attend and these would enhance the performance of students to make the nation proud.
Lastly, students and youths are the leaders of tomorrow, to make them ready and prepared to make the national better, the government needs to ensure they give them proper and good care.
